Glaucoma damages a round structure inside the eye called the optic nerve (arrow)
What is glaucoma? Glaucoma is a disease of high eye pressure. The high pressure damages a part of the eye called the optic nerve, and causes permanent vision loss. People can have glaucoma without knowing it because it is often painless and causes vision loss very gradually from the outside part of the vision. Being screened for glaucoma is important, especially for people that have family members with glaucoma, because they may be at higher risk for glaucoma themselves.

A cataract is when the natural lens inside of the eye (arrow) becomes cloudy over time
What is a cataract? A cataract is when the lens inside the eye becomes cloudy due to the wear and tear of time. Just as wear and tear to a camera lens can cause photos to be blurry, a cataract can cause problems with vision, such as blurriness, glare, and halos in bright lights. These problems may be especially bothersome with nighttime driving. When a cataract affects vision enough that it prevents someone from doing the things they like to do, a surgery can be done to remove the cataract and implant a clear plastic lens to last a lifetime.
